Teaching Social
Skills to Alternative School students is a critical part
of their education if they are going to succeed in the "real"
world. This curriculum is an experiential approach to teaching
skills in a way that integrates the progress of the students
into the "community" of the classroom. This process
includes weekly topics that are taught using high energy,
dialogue provoking activities during a classroom session
led by our staff or a school staff person. Once per month,
an Adventure Learning Day is conducted in a natural setting
such as a Ropes Course, Hiking, mountain Biking, or Canoeing.
The goals of the first month include developing the "buy
in" necessary to have the class self-police on matters
of group norms and behavior. The class is guided through
a process of establishing their own rules and a method for
enforcing those rules.
The 200 page curriculum guide provides the detail for each
module along with instructions for the activities, discussion
questions, corresponding classwork, and group management
tips. The modules can be rearranged to fit the needs of
virtually any class and can be modified to meet the developmental
needs of a wide range of students.
In addition to the curriculum guide, web based supportive
material is provided weekly and program consultation is
provided on an as needed basis.
