Performance Management

Performance feedback is not something people need once in a while; it’s something all of us make use of all of the time. Performance Feedback is not only a formal annual or semiannual event; it is something that is needed continually. It is especially needed after completion of assignments and at every milestone leading to a goal or performance standard. Feedback is behavioral.

The next time you drive down the highway, notice the tiny adjustments your hands make on the steering wheel. You are constantly watching the road, judging how close to the median you are driving, how close to the shoulder or the car in front. Without being aware of it, you make constant use of performance feedback to determine the necessary adjustments in your steering. Driving on even the straightest highway without performance feedback would be like driving blindfold. Imagine how challenging that would be.

Work can be done without performance feedback just as driving can be done without performance feedback; although the feedback makes both more effective. The question is not whether team members will work without Performance Feedback. Without performance feedback from supervisors, team members will assess their own performance or accept the assessment of their friends and co-workers. The real questions are, “How accurate is the performance feedback?” and “Does it advance the goals of the organization?” Team members can only get that kind of performance feedback from the people whose job it is to evaluate their performance: their supervisor.

As a Manager or Supervisor, it's critical that you:

• Understand Why People Do What They Do

• Understand the Impact of Punishment and Reinforcement

• Understand the Types and Power of Feedback

• Practice the Skills of Reinforcing Desired Behavior

• Develop a Plan to Solve Performance Issues & Improve Performance
