JOHN BURTON
Founding Partner

John has been a small business leader in WNC for 40 years, since he joined the Nantahala Outdoor Center in 1975.  As President of NOC John shepherded an extraordinary group of people for 16 years as they grew to over $10 million in sales on the banks of the Nantahala and several other rivers around the Southeast. With his expertise in whitewater activities, John won several national championships, ranked as high as 7th in the World, competed in the 1972 Olympics, and co-authored the book Whitewater Racing with Eric Evans, another esteemed whitewater athlete. John spent 4 years as a Security Analyst at Philadelphia National Bank in the early 70’s, after earning an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

In 1990 John and his wife, Jan Letendre, a CPA, finance officer, and executive coach, put a group of friends and family together to purchase and run the Nantahala Village, a 200 acre, 60 unit resort nearby.  Rescuing a small business that had been important to the community and the region since 1948 was a labor of love and focus, and resulted in a successful sale in 2005.  John returned to NOC as CFO in 2008 and was instrumental in its recent sale that launched NOC to it’s next chapter.  Now, John brings his decades of experience and perhaps even a bit of hard-earned wisdom to to the task of grooming and polishing business leaders as a workshop facilitator, a leadership coach, and consultant. John brings the same passion that drove him as an Olympian and entrepreneur to his roles with Moonshadow.

Katy brings innovation and creativity to the Moonshadow team with the conceptual design and 2013 launch of InMotion, a customized web-based application that provides a follow-up option to strategic leader development solutions.  In 2015 as part of a coaching project, Katy designed and implemented, for a local healthcare facility, an automated Individual Development Plan tracking system for more effective performance management with mid-level managers.  To add to that client effort, Katy created a learning field guide capturing two year’s of leader development content that was distributed to the entire leadership team as a learning resource.

One of the tightly held values of Moonshadow is owning the journey – walking alongside our clients and shepherding their journey.  Katy currently coaches several CEOs, Senior Vice Presidents, and Vice Presidents to that end helping to discover the pathway to their leadership success.
